Rembrandtplein Amsterdam | Rembrandtplein Accommodation | Rembrandtplein Apartments Amsterdam

Rembrandtplein is one of several major squares in the centre of Amsterdam and is named after the famous Dutch master painter Rembrandt van Rijn. Originally a butter and dairy market known as ‘Botermarkt,’ the area saw many restaurants and shops pop up with the turn of the 20th century in sight. Today, numerous cafes, terraces and clubs very popular with young people line the square and are packed all year round.

Located in the center of Amsterdam, Rembrandtplein lies directly in between Muntplein, leading towards Dam Square, and Blauwbrug, trailing into Waterlooplein. This lively square is the perfect place to sit down on one of the busy terraces with a beer or coffee verkeerd (latte) and watch the world pass by.

If the hustle and bustle of tourists and trams don’t immediately shout out ‘Rembrandtplein’ to you, then the statue of the Dutch painter Rembrandt standing tall in the center of the square is bound to give the location away. There are also a number of people selling paintings, jewelry or offering their caricature drawing skills around the square. This is also a nice public place to sit down and relax with a coffee from Starbucks, or even a takeaway meal from one of the nearby shops.

Attractions in Rembrandtplein are not however limited to the abundance of bars, cafes, clubs, casinos or coffeeshops in the area. Just down the road and adjacent to Muntplein is the renowned Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market). This stretch along the Singel canal offers up many florists and garden shops, which are not to be missed for your tulip or souvenir fix.

Film lovers can tear themselves away from the busy Rembrandtplein and transport themselves back in time with a visit to Pathe Tuchinski, a modern cinema housed in a classic building that has been a theatre since 1921.

As the major nightlife hub of Amsterdam, clubbers have a wide range of venues to choose from. There’s the chic and trendy Club Escape, where clubbers can dance under laser lights as DJs spin house music. Club Rain, on the opposite side of the square, is a restaurant, bar, and club, where one can expect to drink, dine and dance the night away to a blend of global sounds, including Hip-Hop, pure funk, electro, and house music. Other popular club joints in the area include Studio 80, Club Air and De Kroon, a grand cafe dating back to 1898, serving up dance nights complete with live DJs.

For a more laidback night, there are also a number of brown cafes and Irish pubs to go for drinks. Many of these joints play popular hits on weekends and become a hotspot for party-goers to dance the night away. If you are looking for a classy place to have dinner there are a number of venues that cater to your needs like Club Rain and De Kroon, while Brasserie Schiller offers up fine Dutch cuisine.

Like many of the other popular squares of Amsterdam, Rembrandtplein magically transforms at the beginning of December in time for the festive season. Here you may find an outdoor ice rink and stands offering warming delights such as Poffertjes (mini pancakes) and Glue Wijn (Mulled Wine).

On Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) the nation’s cherished public holiday which falls on April 30th, the entire square is jam-packed with Dutch party-goers celebrating the birthday of Queen Beatrix. Transport in the city center on this day is almost non-existent, so be prepared to travel on foot if necessary.

For the rest of the year transport to and from Rembrandtplein is fully serviced, with trams 9 (from Central Station) and 14 (from Dam Square) stopping in the square. For those wishing to stay close to this nightlife and entertainment hub, there is a wide selection of hotels and apartments available to rent that will suit most pockets.
